The biggest night in fashion returns on May 5, 2025, as the Met Gala takes place again on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The event, officially known as the Costume Institute Benefit, raises money for the museum's Costume Institute and attracts around 450 of the biggest names in fashion, entertainment, and culture. What is the Met Gala? The Met Gala celebrates the opening of the Costume Institute's annual exhibition and is the museum's largest fundraising event. In 2024, it raised around 23 million euros. The Gala first took place in 1948 and has been chaired by Vogue's editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, since 1995. Theme and Exhibition The theme for 2025 is 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,' focusing on black dandyism and the art of dressing with flair and meaning. The exhibition, inspired in part by Monica L. Miller's book 'Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity,' spans centuries of fashion, art, and identity. Miller, along with Andrew Bolton, the head curator of the Costume Institute, will serve as guest curators for the exhibition. The exhibition consists of 12 thematic sections: Ownership, Presence, Distinctiveness, Disguise, Freedom, Champion, Respectability, Dance, Heritage, Beauty, Coolness, and Cosmopolitanism. Zora Neale Hurston's essay 'Characteristics of Negro Expression' from 1934 also serves as a reference point. The photographs for the exhibition catalog were taken by Tyler Mitchell. Dress Code This year's dress code is 'Tailored for You,' encouraging guests to express themselves through fashion, with a focus on influences from men's fashion. Host Anna Wintour will be supported by co-chairs Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, and Pharrell Williams. LeBron James will serve as honorary chair. The red carpet will open at 23:30 German time. The event offers striking looks, unique designs, and is a celebration of culture, style, and history.
