Alcohol is the number one popular drug in Germany because it is easily available, cheap and socially accepted. According to the Federal Ministry of Health, 7.9 million people between the ages of 18 and 64 in Germany consume alcohol at risk to their health. Problematic alcohol consumption is present in around 9 million people in this age group. In the clinical field, there are clear criteria as to when one speaks of an addiction, says senior physician Dr. Julia Pach at the Clinic for Addiction Therapy in Winnenden Castle.
