New Audi A6 Avant - Advanced and Efficient - the quattro All-Wheel Drive

For many engine options, the quattro ultra all-wheel drive is available. It distributes the drive moments flexibly to drive as efficiently as possible while fully utilizing all the advantages of quattro for even more driving safety and dynamics. An electronically controlled multi-plate clutch distributes the drive torque over a wide range between the front and rear axles as required by the driving situation. For high fuel efficiency, the rear axle is automatically decoupled in the partial load range by quattro ultra, if the driving situation allows. During dynamic cornering, strong acceleration, or when the road surface friction requires it, the controlled multi-plate clutch of the quattro system connects the front and rear axles and flexibly distributes the traction force to where it is needed. When accelerating strongly out of a curve, the drive forces are distributed more towards the rear. In this driving situation, the traction distribution is in a ratio of about 30:70 between the front and rear axles. As an additional component, the V6 TFSI drivetrain optionally features the quattro sport differential on the rear axle, which actively and fully variably distributes the drive moments between the rear wheels. Unlike a conventional locking differential, the sport differential can further accelerate the outer wheel in dynamic driving, i.e., apply more torque to it. This allows the A6 Avant to turn better into the curve. The sport differential counteracts the tendency to understeer early and increases agility. In Audi drive select dynamic mode, a more rear-biased driving behavior can be experienced.
