If you want to create an optimal habitat for hedgehogs, leave the lawnmower out as often as possible. With the milder temperatures, many of these prickly creatures can be seen running through gardens again. There are a few tips you can follow to make them feel at home. It's best not to use your lawn mower too often. Hedgehogs can easily find food and shelter in natural gardens. On the other hand, they have little use for a short-mown lawn. “Their diet includes earthworms, beetles, spiders, caterpillars, snails and other small animals, as well as the occasional egg from a ground-nesting bird species.” Danger spots such as cellar steps, light wells or rain barrels should be secured or removed if possible.
